Today the pupils at Waitahuna School were centre stage as they performed to parents, Grandparents and community members at our End of Winter celebration Assembly.
The children shared what they have been learning during their Science and Literacy topics. They also sang songs and played the ukulele for their guests.
Certificates were presented to representatives who received placings at the cross-country.
The Assembly finished with 3 pupils receiving medals for their attitude and determination while learning the ukulele. (click the image below to see more photos)

LAS Cross-country 2016

Today Waitahuna School travelled to Gabriels Gully for the annual LAS cross-country.
The weather was beautiful and sunny after a very hard frost.
The children competed very well and showed a lot of determination.
Thanks to the parents who were there to cheer them on.
Apologies for the few children who missed being photographed... you were too fast for my camera!

Our Fantastic Parents

The parents and friends of Waitahuna School catered for the local 'Stars in your Eyes' evening last night. The food was amazing and the evening was a lot of fun for all who helped. A huge thank you to this hard-working bunch of people.

Foraging in Waitahuna

Today Waitahuna School went foraging. (Foraging is about making the most of food sources such as fruit trees in the public domain and reconnecting with the origin of our food.)
We didn't have to walk far and we had found lots of big, healthy apples.
Then the huge job of peeling and chopping was undertaken. The children worked cooperatively to complete the job and then set up a production line making the crumble and preparing the packaging.
The school smelled delicious as the puddings cooked in the kitchen and they were still baking after school. If your family didn't get a pudding today it will go home tomorrow.

Junior Swimming Carnival

The 2016 Junior Swimming Carnival was held at the Tuapeka Aquatic Centre. The afternoon always holds its challenges with heat, noise and children excitedly waiting for their races. Thank you to the spectators who gave the competitors their full attention as it helps makes the carnival run a little more smoothly. Well done to the pupils who tried their best to show the skills they have learnt.
What a wonderful pool.
We loved seeing Cody for a wee visit as well.

First Edition of our School newspaper - Writing for meaning

We enjoy keeping in touch with our family and friends of Waitahuna School through our Blog and Facebook Page. To begin the year in our writing programme we decided to create a more traditional way of sharing our stories with you all. Therefore some of you may have received a copy of our 'Summer News' newspaper in your mail box recently. All of the stories have been written by the pupils and the big job of editing the newspaper was taken on by Madaline who is 9. If you have been lucky enough to receive a copy we hope you have enjoyed sitting relaxing with a coffee or cup of tea and enjoying our newspaper. (Some of you may have to wait a while for the snail to deliver)

Swimming Progress 2016

Dear Parents , we thought you might like to see the progress your children are making during our swimming lessons. Since February 1st the children have been swimming each day and quite often twice a day. Ms Johnstone and Mrs Blackmore have been taking this daily coaching and this week Sharon is also coming to share her skills. We are sure you will be as impressed as we are with the progress the children have made. (Please note some children were not swimming today therefore don't feature on the video). Also if you look at the children out of the pool you will see Guided Reading and story-writing taking place.

LAS Athletic Sports 2015

Lawrence Area School turned on some fantastic weather for their annual Athletics Sports. After a deluge of rain overnight the grounds were dust-free and the day was mild,over-cast and pleasant.

The children all competed strongly in their events with some taking away personal best heights in high-jump.

The day finished with the inter-house and Waitahuna School relay.  We were proud to have all our children in the relay this year, although sadly one athlete missed her run due to a visit to Dunedin hospital.  A huge thanks to Caine Ritchie, Liam and Taylor Homer for helping bolster our numbers in the relay, this brought the Homers in the team to six.

(Most photos of the event feature the Under 7's and the relay as the photographer was supporting this group. The rain was also falling through the relay)  - Click on the image below to view the photos:

Thanks Primepac

Waitahuna School would like to say a huge "Thank you" to Primepac for the rugby balls we were fortunate to win in the prize-draw. The kids are enjoying practising their skills at lunch and during PE lessons. Also a huge thanks to Jenna who nominated our great wee school.
